Football Picks - Week 10

Da Bears over San Francisco
Buffalo over Kansas City - I've gotten screwed every time picking the Bills this year ... but with no Priest Holmes KC is going to be impotent.
Arizona over Detroit - The Cards are terrible but Joey Harrington will find a way to screw things up.
New England over Miami - the Pats are pissed over getting embarassed at home on national TV. They will crush.
NY Giants over Minnesota - This game could be 60-0 if the Giants don't pull their starters midway through the 3rd quarter.
Jacksonville over Baltimore
Denver over Oakland
Seattle over St. Louis
Carolina over NY Jets
Atlanta over Green Bay - The Packers are well on their way to winning the Matt Leinert sweetstakes.
Washington over Tampa Bay
Pittsburgh over Cleveland - Charlie Batch goes to 2-0 as a starter. Proving that Big Ben is grossly overrated.
Philadelphia over Dallas - The Cowboys are a fashionable pick in this game, but I think Philly is still good enough to pull things together at home and get a win.

Congratulations to Miss Jennifer Ooms, my new best friend and idol (in a Christian sort of way), for winning lifetime admission and backstage passes to David Crowder Band concerts around the world. Hear hear.

Congratulations to the Minnesota Vikings for beating another crappy team at home. A pattern is beginning to form this season: they beat a bad team at the Dome and follow it up by getting their arses handed to them the following week on the road. Beat New Orleans, got crushed by Atlanta. Beat Green Bay, got crushed by Carolina. Beat Detroit ... it hasn't happened yet, but they'll get crushed again by the Giants next Sunday. Looking at the schedule, I only see three more wins this season:

@ NY Giants: Loss
@ Green Bay: Loss
Cleveland: At Metrodome, so probably a win.
@ Detroit: Probably a win unless Jeff Garcia is healthy.
St Louis: Loss
Pittsburgh: Loss
@ Baltimore: Loss
Chicago: Winable, but the Bears could be jockeying for a playoff seed so it's no sure thing. On the other hand, I can't remember the last time Chicago won at Metrodome.

Here is a good article from Saturday's paper about people who built gigantic houses over the past few years and are now paying insanely high heating and electric bills - over $1,000 for a single month in one case. To put that in perspective, I freaked out last month when my gas bill (for a 3-bedroom duplex) was $60. I will spare you a rant about disgusting levels of conspicuous consumption in American culture.

So we got the ceremony and reception sites for the wedding nailed down over the weekend. I'm hoping we can relax a little now - I'm bored with planning a wedding already. The other thing we started working on was our guest list. OMG, this is going to be ugly.

I'm not sure what it's for exactly but it has her version of how I proposed, so for those of you (girls) who are into that sort of thing, here you go. The double-secret password is "Philadelphia."

You can also look at the stuff we registerd for at Macy's, which was quite the adventure. The helpful luggage salesman told us that the point of registering is that you're not supposed to have to buy anything in your first five years of marriage. Why, you ask? Well. Because you're supposed to be busy popping out kids, that's why. So get to it, bucko.

Anyway, we registered for a $400 vaccum that looks like some sort of rocket.

After about 4 hours in Macy's with the infared zapper gun we went to check out and the lady in charge scolded us for not registering for enough stuff. This was AFTER we registered for a $400 vaccum. And hot pink luggage for Elise. And a bunch of other stuff. $3,100 worth to be exact. Macy's Lady informed us that the average Macy's registry is $5,000 - $10,000, so "you're well below average."

Yeah, thanks for reminding me.

We sounded awesome at worship team practice tonight, wouldn't you say? I think we did.

Week 9 Football picks

Kansas City over Oakland
Minnesota over Detroit - The second Brad Johnson era starts with a win at home against a bad team.
Tennessee over Cleveland - most meaningless game ever.
Atlanta over Miami
San Diego over NY Jets
Carolina over Tampa Bay
Jacksonville over Houston - The Texans will win one more game this season, but it won't be this one.
Cincinnatti over Baltimore
NY Giants over San Francisco
Seattle over Arizona
Chicago over New Orleans - Da Bears are on their way to winning the NFC North with an impressive 7-9 record.
Pittsburgh over Green Bay - It's pretty hard to pick any team with Charlie Batch as their starting quarterback, but with all of their injuries on offense, the Packers are going to have a tough time putting up points.
Philadelphia over Washington - Every time T.O. rips McNabb, McNabb goes out and throws T.O. a bunch of touchdown passes.
Indianapolis over New England - I think the post-dynasty hangover is starting to set in for the Patriots. They're banged up, it's the middle of the year. Indy is the best team in the NFL and it's not even close, and Peyton Manning has yet to really turn it on like he did last year. This game will be close becuase the Patriots still have Manning's number, but I think Indy will finally break through in the end.

I'm going out of town for the weekend, so here are my football picks:

Houston over Cleveland - the only NFL team worse than the Packers will finally get a win.
Cincinnatti over Green Bay - Unless I lost count somewhere, the Packers have lost a starter for the season in every game so far. With no Ahman Green, they will get scorched.
Dallas over Arizona - I haven't picked the Sherriff in any game so far this season. Not going to start this week.
Detroit over Chicago - The Lions finally found a professional quaterback in Jeff Garcia.
Tennessee over Oakland - I really have no clue on this game. Two bad teams.
NY Giants over Washington - Good game.
St. Louis over Jacksonville - Joe Vitt gives an impassioned "Win one for the Martzer" speech, spurring the Rams to victory.
Carolina over Minnesota - Last week's second-half offensive explosion against Green Bay won't hold up against a real defense.
San Diego over Kansas City - Crush of the week.
New Orleans (Er ... San Antonio) over Miami - Why not.
Tampa Bay over San Francisco - I have nothing to say, I don't care about this game.
Denver over Philadelphia - This will be a good one, but Philly isn't as good as they were last year.
New England over Buffalo - The Pats better not screw me again.
Baltimore over Pittsburgh - The Steelers supposedly proved something last week against the Bengals. I think they'll follow it up by laying an egg.

World Series Prediction

I think the White Sox and Astros are two evenly matched teams, which will make for a great series. Good pitching matchups in every game. The Astros offense seemed to come to life in their series against the Cardinals. Whether they can keep it up against the buzz saw of the Sox starting pitching is a big question mark. So is the Chicago bullpen, which has pitched less than an inning in the past two weeks. This series is going to be won by the team that can come up with clutch hits in close games. In that respect, I think Houston has a slight edge. Slight enough that this one will go the distance. Astros in 7.
